To purchase a car in Cyprus it is not required that you be a resident. Non residents may purchase a car in Cyprus.
When purchasing a car you must supply proof that you are and will be insured for the vehicle and a valid road tax certificate, you will find that most car dealers will assist you to ensure these basic requirements are met.
Obtaining a duty free car in Cyprus
As a permanent resident in Cyprus, of which are of a foreign origin are entitled to purchase a single duty free car, however this will not apply to motorbikes or trucks (value added tax (VAT) is still applicable)
To acquire a duty free car, you will have to supply sufficient documentation and the approval process can take up to six weeks.
Transferring ownership of a vehicle post purchase
The form required to transfer the ownership of a vehicle (TOM9) is available in the Greek language only and must be submitted to the department of road transport (DoRT) in Nicosia, this can also be applied from your local office, The document must be completed in full and signed by both the seller and the buyer.
The following documentation must accompany the completed application:
Identification: Passport , Residence Card or Cyprus Identification Card from both the seller and the buyer
DoRT MOT certificate
Proof that the vehicle is insured – from the seller
Once you have submitted your application, the buyer must return to the department of road transport in roughly a week to receive the new vehicle registration documents.
Changing an address on vehicle registration documents
Changes of address can be completed online or at any local DoRT office, unless the change must be recorded on the registration document, which can only be done at the DoRT offices in Nicosia. The vehicle registration document and proof of the new address are required.
Road Tax
Annual road tax is payable for cars in Cyprus. This is calculated based on engine capacity and charged per calendar year (1 January to 31 December). Once the tax is paid, a tax disc is placed in the vehicle window and replaced with every renewal.
The following are required to obtain a road tax disc:
A valid Department of Road Transport Vehicle Test Certificate
Auto insurance
The registration document (log book)
